Great Partnerships Don't Happen by Accident: Part 4, Scaling Your Channel Without the Scaling Mess
Part 4 of the series, with Jeff Lennon and John McCabe
Growth and scaling are not the same thing. In Part 4 of the series, John and Jeff explain the difference: growth adds revenue by adding people and cost, while scaling grows revenue faster than the cost to deliver it. Speeding up a broken, manual process does not scale anything. It just multiplies the friction. They pull lessons from more than 80 episodes of the show, with sports analogies and field stories along the way.
They also revisit Craig Patterson's idea from Episode 80: buyers finish most of their research on their own, before they ever talk to a vendor or partner, so partners have to show up as trusted resources for the final stretch. From there they cover where scaling breaks: too many new partners for the team to support, uneven customer outcomes across tiers, unmanaged channel conflict, and unclear ownership in matrix organizations. Channel leaders need real budget, clear team ownership and executive backing to make scaling stick.
